Dictionary definition of hope – to believe desire or trust

Recently the swallows have returned, they come back every year to the same nests which they built with such great care and skill. They or their parents or members of their flock , I am not sure but they are fascinating to watch. They are seen as the symbol of hope because they are amoung the first birds to appear after winter, herelding the start of spring. They are rarely hunted or harmed and also symbolise new beginnings, sacrifice and rebirth. Hope means to face difficulties with a mindset suitable for success. Having hope can make a present undesirable situation bearable by being able to see an outcome where life will be in some way better and this envisioning of a brighter future in turn motivates us to take steps to make it happen. Dr Valerie Maholmes from the American Psychology Assosiation reports that children who grew up in poverty and later had success in life all had one thing in common – hope. Commented that it involves “planning and motivation and determination to get what one hopes for.“ The psychology researcher, Dr Judith Rich wrote “ Hope is a match in a dark tunnel, a moment of light, just enough to reveal the path ahead and the ultimate way out. “

Having been in a very dark place for way too long unill recently, I can relate to the findings of Dr Neel Burton who says he always asks his patients what they hope for because if they say “nothing“ it is a sign of depression or worse. If there is no hope we loose the feeling of being alive, we give up on oursleves, everyone around us and on the ability to dream for the future. I was stuck in that cave at the end of the tunnel until one day a song stirred pent up feelings of a deep sadness which brought floods of tears and connected me back to living and feeling so that I could see a light in the tunnel. Once I noticed that tiny glow, more brighter lights began to illuminate my way. One of these lights was SFM which has given my hope that I can really make a success of my business, the confidence to put myself out there and the support and knowledge to make these a reality. There are so many great quote out there about hope, it not easy to choose but I am going for two amazing, inspiring woman who I very much admire.

“You may no always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the worlds problems at once but don´t ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.“ Michelle Obama

“My great hope is to laugh as much as I cry, to get my work done and try to love somebody and have the courage to accept the love in return.“ Maya Angelou
